Studio Ghibli has shared the first English-language trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's potential final film, The Boy and the Heron, due in theatres December 8.
The film, which got its international premiere to a sold-out crowd at TIFF this September, follows its protagonist, Mahito, as he deals with the repercussions of losing his mother in the Second World War by navigating time and space with the help of a talking heron who tells him that she's still alive.
Luca Padovan (You, No Hard Feelings) and Robert Pattinson voice Mahito and the heron, respectively. They're supported by an all-star cast of Willem Dafoe, Christian Bale, Florence Pugh, Mark Hamill, Dave Bautista, Karen Fukuhara, Gemma Chan and Tony Revolori.
Despite initial reports that Miyazaki would retire after making The Boy and the Heron, Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka revealed to the CBC on the TIFF red carpet that Miyazaki might not be done making movies after all.
