Late actor River Phoenix (brother to Joaquin) was close friends with Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea — and Flea was even the one who rode with Phoenix to the hospital when he died in 1993. Now, a couple of Phoenix's previously unreleased songs are finally coming out, and they will feature newly recorded basslines from Flea.

The songs are by Phoenix's band Aleka's Attic. They will be released digitally on August 23, on what would have been the actor/musician's 50th birthday. That same day, a pre-sale will begin for a 10-inch vinyl version.

The songs are being released by LeftLaunch, the label run by Phoenix's sister (and Aleka's Attic bandmate) Rain. It's slated to be the final instalment in the "Launched Artist Digital Single Series," which is entirely made up of artists with a connection to Rain.

Red Hot Chili Peppers recently reunited with classic-era guitarist John Frusciante, although their 2020 plans have been interrupted by coronavirus lockdown.
