Ed Sheeran Totally Disappears from Twitter After 'Game of Thrones' Cameo Backlash

But that won't stop him from appearing on an upcoming episode of 'The Simpsons'

Game of Thrones returned for its seventh season over the weekend, and with it came a cameo from UK pop sensation Ed Sheeran. The show's hardcore fantasy nerd fans, however, weren't too thrilled about the redhead's guest appearance.

Twitter had some pretty mixed reactions to the singer's role (during which he serenades Arya Stark with a ballad), and the backlash has caused Sheeran to quit the 140-character social media platform for real.

Earlier this month, he revealed that he had taken a step back from Twitter, keeping his account active only to share automatically synced posts from his Instagram.

"I go on it and there's nothing but people saying mean things," he said at the time. "Twitter's a platform for that. One comment ruins your day. But that's why I've come off it."

Lady Gaga came to his defence, urging folks to be kinder to Sheeran and the rest of the Twitterverse. "I wish all people on the internet would be positive and loving and apart of creating an online community that is kind and empowering, not hateful and mean," she said.

Now, even the auto-generated Instagram posts have disappeared and he's wiped his presence off of Twitter entirely. His former handle @EdSheeran is currently inactive.

UPDATE (7/18, 1 p.m. EDT): @EdSheeran is back in the Twitterverse, though all tweets after April 4, 2015 have mysteriously vanished and his follower count was reset from zero. Follow him here for any additional changes.

You can still creep the dude on Instagram if you so desire. That's how we learned that Sheeran will be playing Lisa's love interest on an upcoming episode of The Simpsons.

This year continues to be equally surreal and amazing. Watch out for this one, me and Lisa have a whole thing going on x

Here's hoping the inevitable backlash after his Simpsons episode doesn't drive him off the internet completely.
