It's one of the most unique jobs in show business, but Conan O'Brien's career has been especially strange. The former Simpsons writer hosted Late Night from 1993 until being bumped up to The Tonight Show in 2009. He was ousted from that gig after seven months, then launched Conan on TBS in 2010. That show has run for 10 years, but it's now been cancelled.
According to Deadline, Conan will conclude in June 2021 following the end of its 10th season. From there, he will then move on to launch a weekly variety show on HBO Max.
"In 1993 Johnny Carson gave me the best advice of my career: 'As soon as possible, get to a streaming platform,'" Conan joked. "I'm thrilled that I get to continue doing whatever the hell it is I do on HBO Max, and I look forward to a free subscription."
Conan switched to a half-hour format in 2019 and had been previously renewed through 2022, but O'Brien has instead opted to switch to HBO Max.
"Conan's unique brand of energetic, relatable, and at times, absurdist, comedy has charmed late-night audiences for nearly three decades," HBO Max's Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys said in a statement. "We can't wait to see what he and the rest of Team Coco will dream up for this brand new, variety format each week."
