The latest development in the dystopian advancement of artificial intelligence is the creation of AI-generated newscasts.
Channel 1, a startup company, is preparing for the 2024 launch of channel1.ai, a news outlet in which current events are delivered to viewers entirely by AI-generated news anchors — the pilot episode of which is set to air this evening.
The project, run by tech entrepreneur Adam Mosam and producer Scott Zabielski, will be distributed by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment and is scheduled to launch initially as a FAST channel.
The pilot episode (referred to as a "showcase episode") is meant "to demonstrate everything from editorial to technology. We just thought it was important to prove we could execute on the idea and show this off," Mosam said [via Deadline].
Mosam explained that the news will be pulled from three different sources — content from independent journalists, AI-generated news based on "trusted primary sources" (such as government documents), and an undisclosed/unannounced news agency.
In terms of the news anchors, Mosam said that they are based on actual people who have been compensated in exchange for the use of their likeness.
"… At every step of our editorial process, we do have humans in the loop," Mosam said.
Mosam claims that Channel 1 is "very clear that the audience at every point in time knows exactly what they are looking at if there has been some sort of AI modification."
The pilot episode features an extremely convincing (and very unnerving) news anchor sharing a debrief of today's breaking news. A couple minutes into the broadcast, footage of an interview with a French-speaking man plays, yet while his mouth is forming French words, an AI-generated voice — matching his tone and intonation precisely — speaks in English.
