The Brenaissance is in full swing, and beloved actor/very humble man Brendan Fraser is filling people's hearts with more of what they want: the hope that he will one day return to the Mummy franchise.
Speaking with Variety, the actor shared that he would consider returning to the role of Rick O'Connell if the circumstances felt right. "I don't know how it would work," he told the publication. "But I'd be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit."
In the same cover story, Stephen Sommers — director of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, and producer of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor — recalled that Fraser "could throw a punch and take a punch and he had a great sense of humour" on the original trilogy's set, adding that he is very likeable and "never comes across as cocky or arrogant" — the perfect ingredients for a revisited Rick.
"He was game for anything we threw at him," Sommers said.
Elsewhere in the interview, Fraser generously reflected on the poorly received 2017 reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise. "It is hard to make that movie," he said.
"The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn't see in the new one, was fun," he added. "That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary."
Perhaps Sommers and Fraser could imbue a bit of fun into yet another instalment of the beloved franchise — but don't get your hopes up just yet! Between the press circuit surrounding The Whale and his upcoming appearance in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon, Fraser should have his hands full for the foreseeable future.
