It was previously reported that filming of Rust — Alec Baldwin's now-notorious indie film, on the set of which cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by a prop gun in October 2021 — would resume filming in January 2022, with Hutchins's widower as executive producer. Then, Baldwin and armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed getting charged with involuntary manslaughter was what actually ended up happening. Even more recently, the actor was sued by the late cinematographer's parents.
Nonetheless, Baldwin is now set to resume filming the movie in the spring with a mix of previous crew members and new ones, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
The production company revealed that Bianca Cline (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, American Horror Story) will be joining as the project's cinematographer in Hutchins's stead, with Matthew Hutchins's "blessing and support." Cline will reportedly donate her salary to charity.
A Rachel Mason-directed and Julee Metz-produced documentary on Hutchins is also set to begin production "with the full support" of Rust Movie Productions. The late cinematographer's husband will executive produce both titles.
"Both Mason and Metz were close friends with Halyna, and they look forward to working with the production to honour their friend and show the brilliance and depth of Halyna's talent while conveying what her loss has meant to her friends, colleagues and the entire film industry," the company said in a statement.
Melina Spadone, a lawyer for the company, added that the scene that was being rehearsed when Baldwin discharged the prop gun that killed Hutchins has been rewritten — but declined to comment on the nature of the changes.
Elsewhere in changes to the production, they're implementing enhanced on-set safety protocols prohibiting any working weapons or ammunition. (Live ammunition has always been barred).
"Though bittersweet, I am grateful that a brilliant and dedicated new production team joining former cast and crew are committed to completing what Halyna and I started," director Joel Souza, who was injured in the shooting, said in a statement. "My every effort on this film will be devoted to honouring Halyna's legacy and making her proud. It is a privilege to see this through on her behalf."
