After being charged for involuntary manslaughter alongside Rust armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed last month, Alec Baldwin is now being sued by late cinematographer Halyna Hutchins's parents.
Although the actor reached a settlement with Hutchins's husband last year and filming for the indie film was set to resume with him serving as executive producer, the filmmaker's family still want to see her 2021 fatal prop gun shooting brought to justice.
The new lawsuit, filed by Hutchins's parents Anatolii Androsovych and Olga Solovey, and her sister Svetlana Zemko, names Baldwin, as well as assistant director David Halls, Gutierrez-Reed, and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. as defendants [via NBC News].
The complainants allege battery, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and loss of consortium. Attorney Gloria Allred described the claim as an attempt to seek "compensation for damages to certain relationships that are mutually dependent."
Like the other language surrounding this case, the new filing argues that on-set safety protocols were ignored and that "actions that were taken were against all industry norms." Baldwin is explicitly accused of playing "Russian Roulette with a loaded gun without checking it and without having the armourer do so."
The document continues, "The fact that live ammunition was allowed on a movie set, that guns and ammunition were left unattended, that the gun in question was handed to Alec Baldwin by the Assistant Director who had no business doing so, and that safety bulletins were not promulgated or ignored, coupled with the fact that the scene in question did not call for a gun to be fired at all, makes this a case where injury or death was much more than just a possibility — it was a likely result."
A news conference held yesterday (February 9) saw Allred confirm that this is a separate matter from the legal proceedings with Hutchins's husband, Matthew, which reached a settlement in October 2022. "There has been no settlement for them ... there has been no outreach to them by Mr. Baldwin to even say that he was sorry," the attorney said. "We want accountability and justice for them. It's as simple as that."
The late cinematographer provided financial support to her family, who are living in war-torn Ukraine — Hutchins's mother is a nurse treating soldiers near Kiev and her brother-in-law is serving in battle [via CNN].
