The holiday season was filled with its fair share of awkward family gatherings, but the entire country witnessed one on last night's episode of Family Feud Canada.
Contestant Eve Dubois, from Lorette, MB, was met with abject horror from her family, unrestrained laughter from host Gerry Dee, and cheers from the opposing Tomlin family when her response to "Name Popeye's favourite food" was "chicken," accompanied by a premature victory dance.
Dubois, of course, confused iconic cartoon character Popeye for the similarly-named fast-food franchise.
To make matters worse, the moment took place in the "sudden death" round of last night's episode, where the two teams of five faced off with a single question to determine who would advance to the "Fast Money" round for the chance to win $10,000 (tax-free, of course).
The Dubois family — defending champions who won the big prize in the previous episode — were not to retain their crown once Eve's opponent, the Tomlin family's Logan White, grabbed his mic to deliver the correct response of "spinach."
The clip has been making the rounds on social media, with a tweet featuring the clip from Calgary podcaster Mike Morrison having been viewed over two million times in 15 hours. Eve herself has weighed in on her viral moment, tweeting, "I thought I won ! I was ready to go home and celebrate" and "I had no idea that I was wrong until I turned back to my family."
A bonus clip released by the show's Twitter account revealed that the sudden death round was originally much longer, as both competitors repeatedly failed to deliver correct responses. It also includes a must-watch extended outro where Gee mimics Dubois's now-iconic shimmy while delivering the wrong answer.
Presently, neither Popeye's Supplements nor Popeyes Chicken has weighed in on the clip.
Watch the hilarious video for yourself below, followed by reactions from the contestant, host Dee and the CBC itself.
