Easing into his set with a slow and steady verbal calisthenics routine, Toronto lyricist Wordburglar demonstrated pretty much from the drop what's in a name in front of the sizeable crowd on hand for the Urbnet showcase at Sneaky Dee's. Pairing far-flung cultural references with impressive ease, the seasoned wordsmith put on a smart display of wit and skill as he lay down bar after bar of punchline-filled, slice-of-life raps that snatched more than a few smirks from around the room. Stories about your high school friend's older brother and metaphorical illusions to croque monsieur sandwiches were just a couple of characteristic thematic starting points, though the crafty MC also showed he wasn't limited to the words in his rhyme book by flipping nonchalant mid-set banter into an impromptu freestyle. Though more than a few of his bars fell just a hair on the fun side of corniness, there's no denying that the word thief's one-liners do stick in your head, nor can you question the man's talent and dexterity on the mic.
