Now in its 38th year, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival has announced the initial names for its 2023 edition. The festival will run from June 23 to July 2.
Only a couple of performers have been confirmed so far. These are: Love in Exile (the new project from Arooj Aftab, Vijay Iyer and Shahzad Ismaily) and jazz combo the Bad Plus.
UPDATE (2/28, 12:30 p.m. ET): The Vancouver Jazz Fest has added BADBADNOTGOOD and Chris Botti to the 2023 lineup.
UPDATE (4/17, 10:50 a.m. ET): The Vancouver International Jazz Festival has shared the details of its emcee competition. Three winners will be chosen to emcee select shows during the festival, and they will receive $250, festival tickets and Jazz Fest swag. Find details on how to apply here.
According to a press release, this year's edition will be a "smaller, more sustainable festival" due to the end of a primary sponsorship (presumably TD, whose brand name is notably absent this year), as well as the rising costs of running the event.
"This year will look a little different for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival," said Nina Horvath, Executive Director of the Coastal Jazz & Blues Society, in a statement. "But what stays the same is our festival programming. We're working hard to bring local, Canadian and international artists to Vancouver, introducing some new music and hosting past favourites. We're announcing new shows and schedules over the next few months, and we encourage you all to come out and support live music."
Tickets go on sale for those shows on Thurday (February 16) at 10 a.m. PT. More ticketed shows and free public events will be announced in the coming weeks and months.
