The American Express webcast series Unstaged has previously presented live concert streams from acts like Jack White, Duran Duran, Coldplay and Arcade Fire, who worked with high-profile directors such as David Lynch, Terry Gilliam and more. Next up in the series will be tropical pop preppies Vampire Weekend, whose upcoming show on April 28 will be directed by actor Steve Buscemi.
This gig at New York's Roseland Ballroom will take place a few weeks before the arrival on the band's latest album, Modern Vampires of the City, on May 14 via XL. Bassist Chris Baio told Rolling Stone that the set list will include about half of the songs from the band's new album, and they have some new tricks to help them pull it off.
"There's some new pitch-shifting stuff on 'Ya Hey.' My background vocals are an octave above what I'm singing so it sounds all shit-monkey, which is funny to hear back," he said. "We have this thing that fucks with [frontman] Ezra [Koenig's] voice in real-time, like on 'Diane Young' on the first chorus. It sounds really great and crazy live."
Watch a trailer for the webcast below.
Although Buscemi is best known for his acting work, he's directed episodes of TV shows like The Sopranos, 30 Rock and Oz. He'll be working on some documentary footage about the band in advance of the show, and apparently this may explore his relation to Scott Baio.
The webcast will stream on YouTube, Vevo and Unstaged's website. We'll leave you with this quote from Baio about the new album's geographical roots: "Our first record was heavily New England in reference, our second record was heavily California in reference and this record has the most New York references. I think there's a sense of geography and travel, and maybe coming-back-home closure in a way that you find in a trilogy."
