Until the Ribbon Breaks

'A Lesson Unlearnt' (album stream)

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 13, 2015

UK outfit Until the Ribbon Breaks have caught the attention of high-profile artists like Run the Jewels and even Lil Jon, but they're ready to become a household name with their debut LP A Lesson Unlearnt. It's scheduled to arrive on January 20 via Kobalt Music Group, but you can hear it before it drops right here on Exclaim.ca.

Opening with the minimalist "The Other Ones," the album goes on to explore a range of electronic sounds and styles. "Orca" — yes, it's an ode to the whale — is a sparse, atmospheric number, while "A Taste of Silver" busts out the guitars for a rock'n'roll vibe. Hip-hop comes through on collaborations "Perspective" with Homeboy Sandman and "Revolution Indifference" with the aforementioned Run the Jewels.

"Persia" experiments a bit with the sounds of the title locale, while the album closer (which shares the band's name) bids the listener farewell with a return to minimalist, downtrodden electro-pop.

As for the album's title, vocalist, keyboardist and percussionist Pete Lawrie-Winfield explained in a press release:

I reached a point where creativity no longer held the same spark and I needed to learn a new way to express what I was feeling. I needed to 'unlearn' and start again. I needed to re-imagine the endless possibility and infinite chance of sitting in front of a piano, a drum machine and a movie projector.... to empty the mind — A Lesson Unlearnt.

The three-piece will be taking the new material on the road this winter, playing a series of shows with London Grammar. You can find those dates below.
