Falling In Between Live

BY Eric ThomPublished May 24, 2008

Toto came into being after graduating from the ranks of top L.A. session players first, releasing their self-titled first album in ’78. As luck would have it, MTV took them skyward, transforming the faceless five-piece into celebrities (notably Lukather and late drumming dynamo Jeff Porcaro), based on the slick pop strengths of their multi-platinum rock. Filmed in Paris at Le Zenith some 17 years after their first live video was released, Falling In Between Live depicts much of the original chemistry that made them bankable: "Rosanna,” "Africa,” "Hold The Line.” What the near-original band (Steve Lukather, Bobby Kimball) and added members (Greg Phillinganies, Simon Phillips, Leland Sklar and Tony Spinner) don’t deliver in terms of youth and vigour they more than compensate for in sheer skill and experience, as award-winning director Blue Leach weaves in patented spin and visual wizardry. The band have remained active and it shows, making this a fun flashback for fans of this once-favourite era. And, as the interview extras suggest, the band are still having some fun with it themselves.
