Toronto-based musician Simon Outhit has played in Sportsfan and is still a member of Dinosaur Island and the Cola Heads, but he's set to release music under his own name for the first time with his debut EP.
The three-song offering is a power-pop and rock-influenced ode to the weekend, so it only makes sense that the tracks are titled "Friday," "Saturday" and "Sunday."
"After spending so many years playing and creating music collaboratively, it can be really difficult to put out a piece of your own personal creativity when you're used to the support of bandmates and friends," Outhit tells Exclaim! "One of my own biggest hurdles was trying to decide what kind of genre to occupy and what style of production to pursue... those are things that I still struggle with because I like listening to pretty much everything. But I realized that was preventing me from creating anything at all, so for this release I really tried to not overthink it, and just let come what may. Thinking less and doing more!"
Outhit played all instrumentation on the recording, except for violin, sax and trumpet on "Saturday," which were played by Leslie Townsend, Joseph Callendar and Stuart Retallack, respectively.
The EP will be treated to a release show on July 28 at Handlebar in Toronto, alongside Lenny Bull, MBG and Canyun. Before that, though, give it a spin in its entirety down below.
