This Will Destroy You

"Paper Cuts" (Nirvana cover)

As previously reported, Robotic Empire is once again saluting the sounds of Nirvana for Record Store Day. The upcoming Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach collection covers 1989's landmark Bleach LP in full, but you can sample This Will Destroy You's ultra glum redo of "Paper Cuts" right now.

Slowed down and spacious, the cover hits a bit weirder than the ragged cries and early grunge-era stonerisms of the original. Instead of Kurt Cobain's in-the-red, vocal cord-shredding vocals, This Will Destroy You throw their nasally, malaise-stricken vocals beneath a blanket of reverb.

The pacing is extra sludgy, with a powerful burst of distortion and crash cymbal cacophony annihilating eardrums before the Texans close things out with an ambient wash of guitar.

Doused in Mud, Soaked in Bleach hits stores April 16 as part of Record Store Day. The covers set also features performances from Circa Survive, Beach Slang, Defeater and more.
