The Tragically Hip have had a busy month, officially joining TikTok and revealing a special Juno Awards performance. Now, the band have announced their month will also include the release of a new record.
Saskadelphia arrives May 21 through Universal Music Canada and features six previously unreleased tracks written in 1990.
Five of those were recorded during sessions for sophomore LP Road Apples, while live cut "Montreal" was captured during a 2000 performance at the titular city's Molson Centre (now the Bell Centre).
Longtime Hip listeners will recognize Saskadelphia as the original working title of Road Apples, which was ultimately rejected by label execs for being "too Canadian." The band had coined the name in reference to their extensive touring cycle of the early '90s.
Drummer Johnny Fay shared of the unearthed material, "We didn't know what was there, so this meant baking [the tapes] and listening to them as they were being transferred. Hearing them for the first time in 30 years was crazy."
In June, the band will perform with Feist at the 2021 Juno Awards, at which they will also receive the 2021 Humanitarian Award.
Earlier this year, guitarist Rob Baker released a new album with Strippers Union, while 2020 saw the release of late frontman Gord Downie's final songs on LP Away Is Mine.
