St. Vincent Initially Planned on Making Her New Album a Tool-Inspired "Heavy Record"

"For fans who may be selfishly hoping to hear something like that Tool record… we'll get there, don't worry"

St. Vincent is already hitting the press circuit hard for Daddy's Home — an album inspired by "music made in New York from 1971-76." But as Annie Clark has now explained, the record almost came out entirely different, as she was planning a "heavy record" inspired by none other than heavy masters Tool.

Clark made the reveal to RADIO.COM's New Arrivals with Bryce Segall, saying she almost gave us all another Ænima.

"The crazy thing about music is, you can plan and plan and think you're gonna go one way, and then you start writing and the music just takes you wherever the music takes you," she explained. "That was certainly the experience with this. I was dead set in my mind that after MASSEDUCTION, I was just gonna make this like, heavy record. Like just heavy the whole time — like, 'Hey kids, you like Tool? Well, you'll love the St. Vincent record,' you know?"

However, Clark eventually had a change of heart and instead looked to '70s New York for her album inspiration.

"I got sort of down the road with that, but I kept finding I didn't have anything to say there," she said. "It didn't feel like anything to go more angular and harder after MASSEDUCTION. But where it did feel free and fun and fresh and a lot of other 'F' words was just to be like, 'Let me go back to the music I've listened to more than anything else: stuff made in New York in the '70s from '71-76.' Post-flower child, pre-disco, pre-punk, and just sit in that space for a little bit."

That said, if the idea of St. Vincent doing a Tool album sounds like a great idea to you, she hasn't totally killed the plan.

"For fans who may be selfishly hoping to hear something like that Tool record… we'll get there, don't worry."

This isn't the first time St. Vincent has shown some love for Tool. Last year, she shared some footage of herself covering the band's classic "Forty Six & 2."
