Just one week ago, Vancouver songwriters Chris van der Laan and Melissa Gregerson released an album with their band Heavy Steps. Now, they've already followed it up with another full-length, this time with the project Sort of Damocles.

Shame + Obligations is the third album from the project, and it's being released under the full moniker Sort of Damocles w/ Sentimental Jug Band. Its 12 tracks venture into haunting horror-synth soundscapes and spookily skittering drum machines. And while most of the vocals are buried beneath layers of reverb and distortion, there are some dalliances with mascara-caked goth-pop — namely the eerie yet sweet "In the Next Room."

The songs were recorded between 2013 and 2018, with guitar contributed by Andrew Candela and bass from Stephen White. Robert Andow plays some Eastern-tinged guitar leads on the aptly named "Messed, Weirder."

The album was mastered by Jordan Koop at the Noise Floor studio. It's out through van der Laan's own Boat Dreams from the Hill label, and is available on major streaming platforms. Listen to Shame + Obligations below.
