Sister Ray, the moniker of Toronto-based singer-songwriter Ella Coyes, has released "Reputations," the third single from their forthcoming debut album Communion.
The song balances on a tightrope of Coyes' raw but graceful vocals and the subtle restraint and slow-build provided by the backing of alt-pop duo Ginla.
In a press release, Coyes said, "It's one of the most 'produced' songs on the record, and we leaned into it. This was my little anthem and I wanted to hear some of that in the production."
Lyrically, the song deals with the collapse of a relationship, with clever couplets like "You always said you'd give me something to sing about / Was that a promise or a threat?" sounding less bitter than they look on paper.
"I wrote this song to make myself feel better about breaking up with my partner and moving across the country," Coyes said in a statement. "It felt so joyous to me when I was writing it, to say some of the things out loud that I had been tentative about for so long."
Communion is out May 13 via Royal Mountain Records. Hear the latest album cut below.
