Shigeto (aka Zach Saginaw) started off his SXSW set with a couple of his more hip-hop-based tracks, using just his laptop and trigger pad. Keeping it uptempo and fun, the beginning segment brought Dilla-inspired, knob-tweaking beats, but on the third track, the Ghostly International artist moved to the kit drums, which is the main appeal of a Shigeto show. Saginaw performed with unbounded enthusiasm, and it was a treat to see a solo show led by such expert jazz drumming. With a feel for rhythm in all its forms, there was little distinction made between MPD and drum kit, the set seamlessly integrating both. What sets Shigeto apart from other electronic acts is not just the addition of live drumming and his skills in this area, but how much of himself he puts into his shows. If this man plays your town, do yourself a favour and go see him.
