It was a tough call: go see the Meat Puppets reunion or check out what Sharon Jones can bring to a parking lot. My dancing feet led me to the lot and Jones brought the goods. Her Memphis-style soul revue had backed up Amy Winehouse the previous night, but now they were back with their queen, a middle-aged firebrand and former prison guard, whose vocals tore through the tent. Her stage presence was magnetic, her joy infectious, and she kept bringing young, good-looking men up onstage to grind with (even hilariously reminding them to "relax and take your time) all while belting out burners like "My Man is a Mean Man.
