Benjamin Curtis of School of Seven Bells tragically died of cancer in 2013, and his bandmate Alejandra Deheza used some of the musician's posthumous recordings to assemble a new album. With SVIIB coming out on February 12 on Vagrant Records, we can now get a taste of the album with "Open Your Eyes."
The song is swooning, cinematic synth-pop number in which a swaggering electronic stop-clap beat is anchored by steadily pulsing synths and a hypnotic vocal line that mostly hangs out on a single note. The arrangement expands and becomes a little more dynamic during the soaring choruses, with the whole thing amounting to a touching tribute to Curtis' memory.
