The Sadies may not have made off with this year's Polaris Music Prize, but the group's performance at the award's gala last month definitely solidified something we've all known for years: the Sadies are one hell of a live band.
Not to discredit their latest psychedelia-dusted country wrecker, Darker Circles, but the outfit just shine so much more on a splintered stage than in the studio. Now, to prove why you need to catch them elsewhere than on your iPod, the band are releasing The Sadies iTunes Live From Toronto.
The digital-only EP is set for release tomorrow (October 5) and features seven songs, including reinterpretations of Darker Circles cuts "Another Year Again" and "Tell Her What I Said." Along with the newer songs, it also digs deep into the Americana-inspired act's massive back catalogue.
Perhaps of biggest interest is a re-done "Strange Birds," which the group wrote and recorded with Mekons main man Jon Langford for his 2003 solo disc, Mayors of the Moon. Six-stringer Dallas Good takes the helm for this version, but it loses none of the original's rustic vibe. Similarly switching things up, tear-jerking slide guitar ballad "Within a Stone" (from 2002's Stories Often Told) gets a facelift as Travis Good takes over his mother's spot from the original to duet with brother Dallas.
