Rami Malek Is Now Defending Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody'

"It's never going to be perfect"

Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has received some very "mixed reviews" from a lot of critics out there, to put it politely, partly due to some pretty serious fact errors. And while Queen guitarist Brian May has already stepped up to defend the film, its star Rami Malek is now doing the same.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Malek addressed the issue of the film not showing the "entire Freddie Mercury story," explaining they wanted to show everything they could in recent Bryan Singer film, but at the same time, they only had two hours to do that.

"In those two hours I know that those men want to celebrate Freddie's life, and there was definitely a cognizant effort not to make this a hedonistic, salacious film," Malek said. "I think we all would have loved to show more of Freddie's relationship with Jim [Hutton] toward the end of his life. That relationship was absolutely gorgeous, and if I had it my way, boy, would I love to tack on another hour to this film and fill in a few gaps."

The actor then added: "It's never going to be perfect in fulfilling the story of a man who we could make countless documentaries about and countless miniseries about."

Malek also expanded on that, explaining that essentially there is no way to please everyone with this sort of film.

"I know there's always going to be polarizing aspects to this film. There's no way around it," he said. "You can do the other version of this film, but we needed to focus on a finite period of time and we always wanted to bookend the film with Live Aid."

As recently reported, May addressed what he referred to as "shitty reviews" of the film, saying, "We've lived with this project for nine years and it's incredible to see it doing so well. It came out to shitty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently."
