A posthumous album by late American trumpeter and composer jaimie branch has been announced. Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)) arrives August 25 via International Anthem, marking the one-year anniversary of the artist's passing.
branch, who passed away in August 2022 at 39, recorded ((world war)) with her ensemble, Fly or Die, that April during a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE. Her bandmates — bassist Jason Ajemian, cellist Lester St. Louis, and drummer Chad Taylor — worked together with branch's family and the Chicago label to finalize the nine-track release.
((world war)) is branch's third and final studio album with Fly or Die. The forthcoming LP follows her 2017 debut Fly or Die, 2019 follow-up Fly or Die II: Bird Dogs of Paradise, and 2021 live release Fly or Die Live.
"take over the world" is the first song from the album to arrive, complete with a video helmed by ex-Bear in Heaven frontman Jon Philpot.
"jaimie never had small ideas. She always thought big," branch's ensemble writes in album liner notes. "The minute you told her she couldn't do something, or that something would be too difficult to accomplish, the more determined and focused she became. And this album is big. Far bigger and more demanding — for us, and for you — than any other Fly or Die record.
"For this, jaimie wanted to play with longer forms, more modulations, more noise, more singing, and as always, grooves and melodies. She was a dynamic melodicist. jaimie wanted this album to be lush, grand and full of life, just as she was. Every time we take a listen, we feel the deep imprint of her all over the music, and we see all of us making it together."
