Last week, the world lost the incomparable Pogues singer Shane MacGowan. The 65-year-old's cause of death has now been revealed.
MacGowan's wife, Victoria Marie Clarke, disclosed to The New York Times that her husband had died due to complications from pneumonia. After revealing an encephalitis diagnosis last year, the singer was hospitalized for months. He was discharged about a week before his death.
"He was trying very hard to breathe," Clarke told RTE. "He wasn't ready to give up. He wasn't ready to stop fighting — but his body did it for him." She also revealed that the musician had completed an album prior to his passing.
Open to the public, a funeral service for MacGowan is set to take place this Friday (December 8) at St. Mary of the Rosary Church in Dublin. Irish President Michael Higgins is expected to appear, as well as the artist's surviving Pogues bandmates, U2's Bono and more. MacGowan's body will later be returned to his home county of Tipperary to be cremated, as per the Irish Independent.
