Aussie outfit the Paper Kites released their debut album, States, last month in their homeland, and it's slated to come out on October 1 through Nettwerk Records. Before then, the record is available to stream in full on Exclaim.ca.
During the album sessions, the five-piece recruited composer Tim Coghill to help them flesh out their tracks, and this collaborative approach resulted in multi-faceted arrangements that include bowed cymbals, horns, strings and more.
The band's songs are sonically rich without detracting from their atmospheric folksiness and low-key nocturnal textures. "St. Clarity" is anchored by quiet banjo plucking and "Tin Lover" is an ultra-soft acoustic ballad, while cuts like "Living Colour" and "A Lesson from Mr. Gray" sport overdriven rock riffs.
Stream the album below. The band will be touring North America this fall, playing opening dates for City and Colour, in addition to headline gigs of their own. See the schedule at their website.
