Olivia Rodrigo is no stranger to a nostalgia-tickling pop-punk singalong — 2021's blockbuster SOUR had one or two, you might've heard them at some point — and she returns to that fertile ground with "Bad Idea Right?," the second single from her upcoming sophomore album GUTS after the big, cinematic "Vampire."
"Bad Idea Right?" is a much snottier, tongue-in-cheek song than "Vampire," with Rodrigo speak-singing through her cycle of ditching friends for a bum ex over chugging guitar and insistent bass — we even get some in-the-red electric noodling at the song's end. It feels tired to even say it now, but if any of Rodrigo's songs were gonna soundtrack a late '90s teen dramedy, this would be the one.
In a statement about the song, Rodrigo said:
"bad idea right?" started with us making a joke song about me hooking up with an ex-boyfriend, but then we realized we were actually onto something. We were throwing the weirdest things at the wall — in one of choruses there's a part that sounds like an instrument in the background, but it's me gradually screaming louder and louder.
The song comes with a video directed by Petra Collins, which you can watch below. GUTS arrives September 8.
