This probably goes without saying, but we totally needed Noel Gallagher's opinion on Harry Styles. We were all but salivating for it, knowing we could not possibly form our own without first hearing what the "Wonderwall" guy had to say.
Thankfully, in a new interview, our prayers have been answered: Gallagher officially thinks Styles's fame has "nothing to do with music whatsoever." In fact, the former Oasis member went on a completely unprovoked rant about the former One Direction member in The Daily Star newspaper's "WIRED" column.
Gallagher marked himself out as a longtime student of the Styles lore, associating the young singer-songwriter's fame with his beginnings on The X Factor in 2010, when Simon Cowell placed him and four other teens together and forged the televised beginnings of perhaps the biggest boy band phenomenon to date. (Okay, the Beatles were kind of big too.)
"The X Factor is a TV show, it's got nothing to do with music," Gallagher told the publication [via Yahoo!] "It's got nothing to do with music whatsoever, and anything that has come from that, that's got nothing to do with music."
"You're not telling me Harry Styles is currently in a room somewhere writing a song," the musician jeered, suggesting that Styles doesn't write his own material. "With any joy, he'll be surrounded by a lot of girls — I can assure you he's not got an acoustic guitar out trying to write a middle eight for something."
Well, we'll just have to see if there's a room where Styles does his songwriting later this year when he invites us to Harry's House with his new album, the title being a potential wink to Joni Mitchell's 1975 "Harry's House/Centrepiece."
This is not Gallagher's first outburst against the fashion icon: back in 2017, the Britpop innovator had taken a swipe at Styles's first solo single "Sign of the Times."
"People of my age have let themselves go — they're fat, balding idiots with fading tattoos," he moaned. "They sit in their garage and write shite like 'Sign of the Times' for Harry Styles. Which, quite frankly, my cat could have written in about 10 minutes!"
Gallagher added that his wife Sara MacDonald was a huge Styles fan: "My wife was falling over herself — 'Have you heard Harry Styles' new song? It's like Prince,'" he said at the time. "I was like, 'Without even hearing it, I can assure you it's not like Prince,'" so the jury's still out on whether or not he's actually listened to it.
Perhaps simply to spite him, his estranged brother Liam Gallagher once admitted to also liking "Sign of the Times."
"I don't mind it, man," the chaos and crisps endorser said. "There's some interesting bits in it. I mean, I don't know how it fucking goes, but fair play to him."
So even if we're merely considering the three people's opinions given here, it seems that Noel is outnumbered by Harry fans. His insinuation that the musician doesn't write his songs or work as hard as he may have back in the day is also reminiscent of Damon Albarn's accusation against poet laureate Taylor Swift about her not writing her own songs, adding that co-writing "doesn't count." Notably, Gallagher's rival brother sided with Swift, pointing out that Albarn's Gorillaz albums were all co-written.
While Noel Gallagher seems continually offended by his existence, we hope Styles remains as seemingly blissfully unaware of the guitar student's in equal measure.
