We need to bring the expression "Whoa, Nelly!" back into the cultural vernacular. Not just because it's one of those fun old-timey white people sayings, but because Nelly Furtado is primed for comeback season — and fellow silky-smooth Canadian crooner Charlotte Day Wilson is getting in on the studio action with the pop legend.
Over the weekend, Wilson shared a photoset — a dump, as the kids call it — on Instagram consisting of cars, records and a wild Furtado sighting. The video shows the two singer-songwriters in the studio together, with Furtado recording the brief clip while Wilson is sat at a grand piano, belting out their work-in-progress. It's a little hard to make out, but it sounds like she's singing "Slow, slow, slow it down" on the hook of the moody piano ballad. Furtado likewise posted the video on her Instagram story with the caption, "🐐 energy."
Of course, Wilson asserted her dominance on 2021's Alpha — named one of Exclaim!'s 50 best albums that year. And while Furtado hasn't released music since 2017's The Ride, her comeback has been percolating big time as of late: she dipped her toe back into performing at Drake's OVO Fest last year (and hung out with Dua Lipa, Avril Lavigne, Fefe Dobson, Alessia Cara and the like) ahead of her first full-length set in five years at Australia's Beyond the Valley festival in January.
See Wilson's Instagram post below, and stay tuned for the fruits of her and Furtado's collaborative labour to shake loose.
