Finally, some good news: the esteemed legacy of the late, great Neil Peart is being honoured with a scholarship for young drummers from Modern Drummer magazine.
The "Neil Peart Spirit of Drumming" scholarship will present up-and-coming percussionists with an incredible opportunity for growth in honour of the Rush legend.
A lucky recipient will be provided with 52 weeks of free lessons from world-class drumming instructor Dom Famularo, alongside a one-year subscription to Modern Drummer All Access and a selection of classic Rush albums.
Non-professional musicians between the ages of 14 and 21 living in the US are invited to participate by submitting a two-minute video performance and a short essay explaining how the scholarship would impact their lives — as inspired by Peart's distinguished career and prowess behind the kit.
Submissions are due here by November 26, 2021. One winner will be announced at the 2021 Modern Drummer Festival and featured in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
This isn't the first time Modern Drummer has supported Peart's legacy: they enlisted several notable drummers to pay tribute at last year's festival, held on September 12, 2020 — what would've been the musician's 68th birthday. Plans for the scholarship were initially announced then by Peart's widow, Carrie Nutall-Peart.
The Rush icon died on January 7, 2020, three-and-a-half years following his brain cancer diagnosis. After being rescheduled multiple times due to COVID-19, a memorial celebration for the late maverick is set to take place in his hometown of St. Catharines this November.
It goes without saying that Peart's one of the most revered drummers of all time, but Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers recently said "there will never be another one" like him anyway.
Meanwhile, the surviving members of Rush were recently rendered speechless by a tribute from the Ohio State marching band. Guitarist Alex Lifeson also revealed that he won't tour his new Envy of None project and Geddy Lee is writing his memoirs.
