My Morning Jacket have a new album called The Waterfall out, and yesterday (May 7) they went about promoting it with a daytime television performance of "Big Decisions" on Ellen.
While the album version of this tune is a crunchy riff-rocker, the mixing on this performance renders the guitar almost entirely inaudible. Instead, the instrumentation is dominated by piano and pedal steel, making it sound significantly mellower. Meanwhile, frontman Jim James looks snazzy in the same hat and gaudy jacket he wore on Fallon, and the stage is decorated with a large moon.
