Mitski Details 'The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We,' Shares "Bug Like an Angel"

The follow-up to last year's 'Laurel Hell' arrives in September

As previously teasedMitski has now officially announced her new album, previewed by today's release of lead single "Bug Like an Angel."

The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We arrives on September 15 via Dead Oceans. Produced by longtime collaborator Patrick Hyland, it's the follow-up to last year's Laurel Hell.

The LP was recorded between Nashville's Bomb Shelter Studios and Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles, incorporating an orchestra (arranged and conducted by Drew Erick) and a full choir of 17 people — 12 in L.A., five in Nashville — arranged by Mitski herself. It's the first time the artist felt like she needed to have a full band recording together in the studio, resulting in a newfound sense of grandeur in the recordings.

Its stately first single exemplifies the larger-than-life sound the singer-songwriter has embraced on the record, with the choir crashing in at full volume after Mitski's rock-bottom admission, "Sometimes a drink feels like family." Hopefully whoever said they hoped the musician would rediscover the guitar for this album is at least somewhat satiated by the acoustic strums?
