Published Jul 14, 2020Last September, Metallica performed two nights with the San Francisco Symphony for S&M2, a revisitation and expansion of their work with the ensemble captured on 1999 live album S&M. Now, the details behind a box set release of those 2019 shows have been revealed.
UPDATE (7/15, 11 a.m.): Metallica will release S&M2 on August 28 in a variety of formats. A deluxe box set includes limited edition 4xLP coloured vinyl, a photo book, two CDs, a Blu-ray, sheet music, guitar picks and more. Watch the band perform "All Within My Hands" and "Nothing Else Matters" below, and pre-order the album here. That's the art above.
Blabbermouth reports that the set will be officially announced tomorrow (July 15) at 9 a.m. ET via the band's official social media channels. While we'll be awaiting an official release date until then, drummer Lars Ulrich announced the set's August release last week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
You can find some clips of the performance alongside a tracklist below. S&M2 was shot over the two sold-out Metallica shows that opened San Francisco's Chase Centre last year. Each show found Metallica on a circular stage in the middle of the floor, surrounded by the symphony players.
The three-hour concerts were split into two parts. The performance opens with the orchestra performing the late Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold," which Metallica came to use as stage entrance music. A concert highlight is also a rendition of "Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)" performed as a solo by the symphony bassist Scott Pingel, in tribute to Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton.
Earlier this year, Metallica announced their own vinyl subscription club, and have been streaming their way through quarantine. They might even record some new music.
