Classic Albums: Bat Out of Hell

BY Sam SutherlandPublished Feb 19, 2007

This DVD succeeds in proving how incredibly, untouchably cool Todd Rundgren is and, simultaneously, what a total ass Michael Lee Aday is. Hearing the veteran rocker explain how he helped craft the overblown rock spectacle that was the first Bat Out of Hell record is fascinating, as he strips away the excessive layers of songs like "Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.” Jim Steinman explains the writing process in an interesting fashion, but it’s Lee’s embarrassing tendency to solo his own voice and then sing along that really hurts and makes this documentary worth watching.
