Maynard James Keenan has long been regarded as one of rock's most enigmatic frontmen, with his work in Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer all showing different sides of his creative brain. After inking a book deal back in October, fans will able to learn more about the man behind the music with the release of his authorized biography, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things.
Written by author Sarah Jensen along with Keenan, the book will arrive November 8 through Backbeat Books. An official description of the book reveals that it will recount Keenan's childhood years, his time in the army, art school, wine making and musical career. The book will also feature a foreword by Alex Gray, designer of Tool's album and stage art, as well as reproductions of Keenan's early drawings and writings.
"Until now, Maynard's fans have had access to only an abridged version of his story," the description continues. "A Perfect Union of Contrary Things presents the outtakes, the scenes of disappointment and triumph, and the events that led him to take one step after the next, to change direction, to explore sometimes surprising opportunities. Included are sidebars in his own words, often humorous anecdotes that illuminate the narrative, as well as commentary by his family members, friends, instructors, and industry colleagues."
While we're still unsure when a new Tool record will arrive, the release of Keenan's biography should help quench the thirst for new music a slight bit. Puscifer released their third studio LP Money Shot last year.
UPDATE (07/26, 12:20 PM): Keenan will take the book on tour this November, partaking in a moderated discussion about the writing and life, with question and answer sessions to follow.
