Alternative singer-songwriter is an incredibly tough genre to stand out in. Lucky for Marlaena Moore that her earnest, "aw shucks" attitude and self deprecating charm (The opening line from her song "Sidekick": "I was an ugly teenager / I look the same as I do now") are impossible not to notice.

Besides, standing out in a ubiquitous genre seems far less daunting than literally standing out in front of the largest audience of your career with only a guitar, a set of songs, and a heart-shaped tattoo on the part of your arm where a sleeve should be. If Moore was nervous, she didn't let on.

A sizeable group of people gathered around her side stage spot, where she remained firmly planted, letting her gorgeous voice travel out into the festival grounds. She winked toward hometown friends and played through homespun versions of her charming songs.

Her interstitial set at Interstellar Rodeo was short but tooth-rottingly sweet. She proved to herself that getting up to perform in front of a large audience was the best possible way for her to get down in her own hometown.
