Singer/actor Marianne Faithfull has died at the age of 78, a spokesperson has confirmed to the BBC.
"It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of the singer, songwriter and actress Marianne Faithfull," a statement reads. "Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family."
The English musician was best known for her contributions during the British Invasion era, as well as her romantic relationship with the Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, and her acting roles starting in the mid-'60s with I'll Never Forget What's'isname and The Girl on a Motorcycle, all the way through to credits in Absolutely Fabulous (in which she appeared as God), Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, and Denis Villeneuve's Dune (2021), as well as several stage productions.
She released two dozen studio albums over the span of her career, despite taking a lengthy break in the late '60s amid persistent drug abuse and addiction issues that left her voice permanently changed. Her last album remains 2021's She Walks in Beauty, a collaborative effort recorded with Warren Ellis with contributions from Nick Cave, Brian Eno, Vincent Ségal and more.
Faithfull's autobiography was published in 1994.
Back in September 2024, Thurston Moore, Courtney Love, My Bloody Valentine's Deb Googe and Portishead's Adrian Utley teased a project of Marianne Faithfull covers.
In 2020, the singer was hospitalized with COVID for several weeks.
