Lydia Hol

"Ammunition"

BY Sarah MurphyPublished Jan 11, 2016

From her studies of English literature to sharing the stage with folk greats like Sylvia Tyson, Dar Williams and Shari Ulrich, Lydia Hol has no shortage of experience to draw upon when it comes to storytelling. She's ready to follow up her 2012 EP Boats with a new record titled Heading North this year, and Exclaim! has got the premiere of the brand new single "Ammunition."

The album hears Hol branching out and working with artists like Jesse Zubot (Tanya Tagaq, Dan Mangan), Paul Rigby (Neko Case, Matt Andersen) and John Raham (Frazey Ford), channelling a "collective spirit" into the new material. With a style that ranges from soft and sweet to tenacious and unafraid, the album presents a multifaceted look at Hol's work as a feminine folk singer.

"Ammunition" was co-written by Victoria musician Mike Edel, but it's Hol's voice that drives the ballad-esque number. Countering the quiet, entrancing verses courtesy of Hol, strings from Zubot make the song's chorus soar. Hear the expertly crafted ebb and flow of "Ammunition" in the player below.

Heading North is officially out on January 15, and Hol will play a CD launch show at St. James Hall in Vancouver on January 23.
