L7 Take Aim at Trump on New Single "Dispatch from Mar-a-Lago"

It marks the band's first new song in 18 years

L7 recently announced plans to release a pair of new tracks in the lead-up to a new documentary dubbed L7: Pretend We're Dead. Well, the feminist grunge punks are definitely alive and kicking, and they've just unveiled the first of the new songs.

Naturally, "Dispatch from Mar-a-Lago" hears the band taking aim at Donald Trump. The riot-referencing lyrics envision an uprising against the American president, declaring: "The whole friggin' country club is under attack."

Speaking to Pitchfork, singer and guitarist Donita Sparks explained their decision to take on such a timely topic for their first track in nearly two decades. She said:

It would almost be negligent to not make any sort of a comment on the current political situation, and our fans were just so devastated that we were like, "Fuck it. We don't care if this is topical and, quite frankly, we're one of the only bands that could actually fucking do it." Because we've got that humor and that furiousness, and we take on politics and society.

We did discuss it, because it's the bands that stick their necks out that get the most fucking shit, and we've gotten that before. "Hey, is this the first track we want to come out with? Are we sure we can handle the trolls? Are we ready to be called fat and ugly and old?" But then we were like, "Fuck, yes." Everybody gave it a thumbs up. Making fun of your government is a tradition older than this country, and that's what this track is.

As previously reported, L7: Pretend We're Dead hits Blu-ray and VOD on October 13. Find details for the remaining theatre screenings here.
