Chicago-based singer-songwriter and former National Youth Poet Laureate Kara Jackson has announced Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?, her debut album arriving April 14 on September.

Alongside the album announcement, Jackson has also shared a video for new single "pawnshop," which follows previously released songs "no fun/party," "brain" and "dickhead blues." It's another spacious, bluesy stunner, driven by Jackson's plainspoken poetry and some coppery slide guitar.

"pawnshop" is about "uncovering how worth is subjective," Jackson said in a statement. "It's taking 'one man's trash is another man's treasure' and revelling in that sentiment, taking pride in the fact that even if people can't understand your value, only you know how priceless you are."

Jackson wrote and recorded the Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love? demos in her childhood bedroom during the early days of pandemic lockdown, after which they were rerecorded with help from Nnamdï, Kaina and Sen Morimoto.
