Toronto-based Daniel Romano's Outfit musician Julianna Riolino has announced the release of her debut solo album. Today, she's previewed the full-length effort with lead single "Lone Ranger."
All Blue is due October 14 via You've Changed. It follows Riolino's 2019 EP, J.R., which established her direction as a solo artist and saw her open for the likes of Romano, Julie Doiron and Born Ruffians — all while moonlighting with the Outfit.
Produced by Aaron Goldstein (Cowboy Junkies, Ducks Ltd., Le Ren, Kiwi Jr.), the album was recorded in August 2020, with a small group of musicians playing together in the room at the now-shuttered Baldwin Street Sound. "Recording live made for some long days, but it was a lot of fun and I had the benefit of working with some really talented people," Riolino said of the process in a press release. "It helped create this feeling of glimpsing a moment in time. It's like therapy: I could just let out this period of life and then move forward."
Ahead of recording, Riolino spent time helping to restore the stained glass windows at St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto; an experience that made her reflect on her own morality. "It made me think about life as a balancing act, and we're all just trying to do our best to navigate it," the artist explained.
This human struggle is palpable in her Americana-indebted approach to songcraft. Inspired by icons like Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and the Band, "Lone Ranger" was the first song of her own Riolino showed to friends and family when she was in her late teens. A decade later, she's reimagined it as the headstrong lead single for All Blue, with rollicking honky-tonk piano and rip-roaring guitar fuzz.
