Jerry Garcia Documentary Slated for Tentative Spring Release

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Jan 5, 2012

Late Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia will be the subject of an upcoming full-length documentary that producers hope to have out sometime this spring.

Filmmaker Malcolm Leo's as yet-untitled flick will revolve around a three-hour interview he conducted with the guitarist in 1987, and will feature music from throughout the musician's career. While the inclusion of Grateful Dead music seems like it should be a given, considering Garcia's estate put the kibosh on a proposed biopic planning to do the same, the fact that Leo and co-producer John Hartmann managed to secure the rights to use the tunes is a feat in itself.

While the movie is said to include various home movies and rare concert footage of Garcia performing with the iconic jam band, filmmakers managed to capture members of Furthur (featuring Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh) and fans at the San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park at last year's Jerry Garcia Day (August 7) playing a world-record-setting performance of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" on over 40,000 kazoos. The performance is set to be included in the film.

Leo has a history of making music-related films, having helmed Elvis Presley documentary This Is Elvis and the Beach Boys film The Beach Boys: An American Band.
