Echoes

BY Amanda AshPublished Jan 26, 2009

If there's one song on Echoes that captures the personal journey Jenn Grant's taken since we last heard her on Orchestra For The Moon, that song is "Heartbreaker." Echoes is a break-up album, however, it only became a break-up album once Grant stepped away from her automatic writing process and realized the instructions to end a long-time relationship were laid out on paper. The Halifax singer-songwriter keeps some of her wispy, folk-y, carefree melodies on the record but many of them have developed a bit of a darker edge. She's matured and taken a more critical outlook on life. Tracks like "Heartbreaker" run deep with emotion, as heard in her soulful vocals and steadfast, marching instrumentals. "You'll Go Far" and "Where Are You Now" are melancholy and dream about happier times. Even though Grant's taken a heavy-hearted turn, Echoes isn't any less personable or enjoyable. In fact, there's a sense of beauty in her heartbreak and Grant's willing to share it all.
