Last night (February 26), it was revealed that BC alt-rock duo Japandroids won an online vote that would have their "The House That Heaven Built" played as the entrance music for hometown hockey team the Vancouver Canucks.
The news was delivered by the NHL franchise via Twitter before a game against the Phoenix Coyotes, and the song then had its proper debut at Rogers Arena. Apparently the band were the clear winners of the contest, with the Canucks writing: "There it is! @Japandroids won Project NU2 — and by a long shot. #Canucks."
As previously reported, the Canucks sought out a new tune for the team to skate to via the NU2 Project contest, which aimed to offer alternatives to their long-running intro of U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name." The other songs nominated were Static in the Stars' "We Are," Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle," Volbeat's "A Warrior's Call," DJ MEG's "Stockholm" and Nickelback's "Burn It to the Ground."
Unfortunately, "The House That Heaven Built" didn't prove to be good luck for the Canucks, as they lost to the Coyotes 4-2, but the tune will be blasted again this Saturday (March 2) when they square off against defending Stanley Cup champs the Los Angeles Kings.
It should be noted that "The House That Heaven Built" will be placed in rotation with a number of other songs.
