Jaga Jazzist

One Armed Bandit

BY Sarah FergusonPublished Feb 16, 2010

One Armed Bandit by Norwegian electronic jazz troupe Jaga Jazzist is invigorating and perky, like a fresh-brewed shot of espresso. Nine musicians working congruently in a synchronous battlefield of artistic vision, Jaga Jazzist came to life in 1994. Artists from their ever-changing cadre of musicians have played leading roles, in fact, on most significant music emerging from Norway and the area recently. The tunes on One Armed Bandit set forth dramatic, calming, sensual tones using guitars, horns, percussion, keyboards and electronics. Imagine the musical overlay on upbeat scenes for Hawaii Five 0 or The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and you are closer to hearing this record. One Armed Bandit reaches beyond the imposed limits of musical composition that any musical lover could be into (jazz fans or not). Citing influences from Spiritualized to Public Enemy, Sly & the Family Stone to Sonic Youth, for Jaga Jazzist, musical integrity is key.
