Holly Miranda

The Magician's Private Library

BY Ian GormelyPublished Feb 22, 2010

Holly Miranda already went through the indie rock meat grinder once. With her band the Jealous Girlfriends, the singer/guitarist weathered the indie boom of the noughties, landing song placements on Grey's Anatomy and in iPod commercials, but found little interest outside the world of music supervisors and hipster bloggers. With that band now on indefinite hiatus, Miranda is venturing out on her own, with a little help from fellow Brooklynites TV on the Radio and Antibalas. The Magician's Private Library is bathed in the same TV on the Radio-esque droning reverb he created for Scarlett Johansson's debut. The sonic comparisons to Sitek's main gig continue thanks to swooning background vocals from Tunde Adebimpe and horn flourishes from members of Antibalas. But make no mistake: Miranda's strong, distinctive voice is the centrepiece on each of the album's ten tracks. The slow groove of "Waves" is a particular highlight, as is the playful bounce of "Everytime I go to Sleep." The Magician's Private Library exposes Miranda as a musical force to be reckoned with, one that we'll hopefully be hearing much more from in the future.
