Holly Miranda

"Waves"

TRACK OF THE DAY: Solo albums tend to come and go with little notice, outside a band's core fan base. just take a look through the discount bin at your local used record shop and you're bound to find at least a couple of ill-advised solo ventures from some of your favourite bands.

But one-time Jealous Girlfriend Holly Miranda is poised to be the exception to the well established rule, striking out on her own in a big way. Her debut album, The Magician's Private Library, was produced by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek and features contributions from members of TV on the Radio and Antibalas.

Of course, the proof is in the pudding - you can line up all the big name collaborators you want, but you still need good tunes. Thankfully, "Waves" beautifully fuses Sitek's lush, droning production with Miranda's haunting vocals floating overtop. Even stripped of all its studio wizardry, this acoustic version shows off Miranda's powerful, unique voice.

With the Jealous Girlfriends on indefinite hiatus, things are looking up for a long and fruitful solo career. The Magician's Private Library is out February 23.
