Hawksley Workman

He may have jokingly said he'd never performed for a crowd before, but those who know Hawksley Workman know he's a seasoned professional. Workman played songs that spanned his career accompanied by his "long time crush" Mr. Lonely, a.k.a. Todd Lumley. A couple of times during the show Workman pulled up a chair beside Lumley at the grand piano and played with him. From "Jealous of your Cigarette," to "Smoke Baby" the duo made classic Workman songs seem new again. But what made the show even better was the humour that comes with a Workman show. The singer/songwriter/rocker had the audience in stitches as he made up songs about the venue's sponsor Deezer and wove in lyrics from "867-5309 (Jenny)" by Rick Springfield and the Police. The only flaw of the late night show was when Workman invited out his Mounties bandmates Steve Bays and Ryan Dahle to perform "Tokyo Summer." Bayes struggled with the octaves of the song while Dahle stood trying to add any vocals he could. Even though the song seemed unrehearsed, it showed Workman's love of collaboration.
